Dix Hills resident David Cahoon, 40, was indicted on Thursday, July 25, after being arraigned by a grand jury for allegedly stabbing his 70-year-old uncle to death in his Levittown home.
Cahoon was arraigned and charged with second-degree murder, possession of a forged instrument and grand larceny. He was remanded to custody and is scheduled to appear back in court on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
If convicted of murder, Cahoon will face a maximum term of between 25 years to life in prison.
Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said that on Jan. 4, the body of William Cahoon was found by members of the Nassau County Police Department in the back bedroom of his Levittown home.
Cahoon was found with 18 stab wounds to his head, neck, and chest, Singas said.
According to Singas, the officers responded to the home following a request for a wellness check by staff at the Milleridge Inn on the victim. Cahoon had been a regular at the restaurant and had dinner there every Friday and Saturday for 25 years.
The restaurant staff became concerned about Cahoon’s wellbeing after he didn’t show up for approximately four weeks, prompting further police investigation.
The investigation into Cahoon’s death determined that he was killed on Dec. 3 last year, allegedly by his nephew, who was arrested on June 19. It is further alleged that his nephew stole $1,800 from his uncle by fraudulently cashing a check from his bank account.
“The victim had a routine of visiting the same restaurant every weekend and his friends there became concerned when he did not show up for several weeks,” Singas said. “According to the indictment, Mr. Cahoon’s nephew brutally stabbed his 70-year old uncle to death and stole $1,800 by fraudulently cashing a check. Thanks to excellent police work the defendant has been apprehended and will now face justice.”
